Memorial Day weekend started with a celebration by the Hawks as both varsity quads earned top 5 finishes at SRAA Nationals!
Racing began with the grand final for the boys varsity quad. MIchael Gasiorowski, Brendan Savell, Henry Fowler, and Gavin Dunn powered through choppy waters in lane 6. A bit behind on the start, the boys never gave up and fought back through the field with a very impressive sprint in the last 500 meters to earn a bronze medal the ranking of third fastest scholastic quad in the nation! Even though the girls raced in the very next event it felt like a whole new day as the rain clouds rolled in and wind picked up. Maddy Baranes, Kate Gasiorowski, Caroline Hollingsworth, and Payton Cronin faced a mix of white caps and powerful winds but stayed calm. They fell just short of reaching the medals dock, but came away from the weekend as the fourth fastest scholastic quad in the nation! There may only be eight names in this post, but the whole team can take credit for these finishes! It takes the work of everyone to push each other to be their best! The Hawks are headed to Florida next to compete in the USRowing Youth National Championship in Sarasota, Florida in June! GO HAWKS!! Day one of the SRAA National Championship marked the end of the season for four crews and launching pad to finals for two. It was a solid day overall with some really tough heats for the early races, and a big finish at the end of the day. Both the men’s and women’s varsity quads advanced to Saturday’s finals, with the boys posting the third fastest overall time! The boys race at 2:36 pm and the girls are right behind them at 2:44. More information on Saturday’s racing will come at the end of this post.
The day started with Anthony and Ryan in the Lightweight Senior Double. Several lightweight events have been dropped over the past few years so this event is extremely fast and Anthony and Ryan threw down a very strong performance. Despite their effort they were unable to advance to Saturday’s finals. In what should probably have been the final, the freshman boys quad of Thomas, Granger, Luke and Jamie tore down the course with a great race finishing with a top 5 overall time. Unfortunately their heat was by far the fastest so their season ended early. The boys can hold their heads high knowing they have the speed to compete with anyone in their event! Both the men’s and women’s junior quads entered the weekend knowing they would be facing some really tough competition. Marley, Chloe, Genny, and Malie faced off against some of the fastest quads in the country with three freshman and really held their own! The future is looking bright for this group and we can’t wait to see them progress into next season! Ian, Callum, Connor, and Christian also faced an uphill battle in their heat but were able to end the season as the 12th fastest scholastic junior quad in the country! This is another group we are extremely excited to see grow and develop!
