Haddon Township Rowing team celebrated the end of their fall 2021 competitive season with the traditional panzerotti party at Franco's Place on Thursday night. This fall the team competed in four regional regattas as well as the Head of the Charles in Boston. Working off all those calories won't be an issue for these athletes as the team will continue to train through March to prepare for spring racing. Spring is the more significant season with three times as many regattas as the fall. Many thanks to the Franco's team for their hospitality, good humor and great food. HT Rowing had a busy weekend up in Mercer, ending the fall season with the Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta on Saturday and the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta on Sunday! There was great racing across the board as the team earned 10 third place finishes, 6 second place finishes, and a gold medal! Some of the most impressive racing came from the freshman/novice group, who have made tremendous strides through the fall season, and had impressive results, even against varsity competition! There is a good chance that it will be cold and rainy so bring layers and dress for the weather. All athletes are required to arrive at the trailer 2 hours prior to race time.
Also, next week will be our last formal week of fall practice. We will meet at the boathouse right after school on Monday to unload the trailer, Tuesday will be an off day, then Wednesday through Friday will be at the school. HT Rowing spent Sunday competing on the Schuylkill River in the Hidden River Chase. The club sent 13 crews to race against some of the top junior competition in the area!
The morning began with the singles. Colin Clark was the first to compete for the Hawks finishing in 7th place overall in a difficult boys 1st single event. Fiona Gallagher followed him, putting together a strong piece in the girls 1st single and improving off of previous times. Cami Woolston was the last to race in the single for the Hawks, finishing in 5th place in the girls 2nd single event. Racing in the single requires a tremendous amount of will power and determination, especially over a 4k course – Great work, Hawks! The day continued for the Hawks with the doubles. Mark Kocher and Brody Moser, and Caroline Reich and Jacqui Weber put together strong races in the boys and girls 1st double events, building off of the technical work they have been focusing on in practice. Michael Chiroux and Tommy Smith, and Anthony Gattone and Dane Pagaduan – three of whom have been in a double only a few times prior to this weekend – forgot about their lack of experience and looked great coming down the course, finishing in 4th and 6th place respectively in the boys 2nd double event! The weekend ended for the Hawks with the quad events. The varsity boys quad of Luke Gerber, Jack Fowler, Joey Savell, and Josh Dykas improved through this past week to build from their Head of the Schuylkill result, finishing in 5th place overall in the boys 1st quad event. There were two varsity quads on the girls’ side and both put solid pieces together! Maggie Dunn, Brooke Bazulis, Sarah Lex, and Mary Theresa Fitzpatrick – racing together for the first time this season – finished in third place overall in the girls 1st quad event! Grace McHugh, Gina Gerber, Athena Constantakos, and Ella Chiroux followed right behind them with a strong 10th place finish. Both crews have made some big technical improvements recently! It was another great weekend for the novice group! Brendan Savell, Ryan Henry, Cavan McGovern, and Henry Fowler finished in fourth place in the boys 2nd quad event and were followed closely by Hans Geist, Justin Capri, Evan Giamboy and Julian Craft who finished in fifth place. The whole group has been gaining speed each day! Lilly Noble, Kara Sheeky, Elena Gibison, and Mariah Gallagher finished the day for the Hawks placing third in the girls 2nd quad event, and making some huge improvements over last week’s race! The Hawks will end the fall racing season this weekend in Mercer, NJ, competing in the Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta on Saturday and the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta on Sunday! Go Hawks! HT Rowing heads back to the Schuylkill River on Sunday for the Hidden River Chase Regatta. Kelly Drive will not be shut down, but be prepared for closures on the Ben Franklin Bridge due to the Norcross Run.
Anyone who did not race last spring must print out, sign, and bring the waiver to practice tomorrow to be eligible to participate. The waiver can be found HERE. The trailer will be located at the St. Joe's/Temple Boathouse parking lot. All athletes must arrive 2 hours prior to race time.
