The Hawks returned to the Cooper River for another successful day on Sunday at the Cooper Cup!  The regatta was shortened to 1500 meters due to high winds but crews didn't let that stop them from having another great day!

Alex and Morgan had a great heat in the womens varsity double, finishing in second place and qualifying for the finals in the afternoon.  The girls wrapped up a long weekend, finishing sixth overall in their fourth race in two days!

Davey and Nick raced next for the Hawks in the mens varsity double.  They raced hard against a tough field, finishing fifth in their heat.

Aidan, Vince, Jack H, and Jack S cruised to a solid second place finish in the heats of the mens varsity quad event, and qualified for the afternoon final.  This is where they really went to work, finishing in third place overall, missing out on second place by 0.03 seconds, and closing the gap on Conestoga!

Olivia, Fiona, Maya, and Sara continued their outstanding season with another victory in the womens novice quad.  They finished 9 seconds ahead of second place and remain undefeated!

John B, Owen, and Jon W continued their great weekend with another gold medal, They raced to an amazing 37 second victory in the mens novice quad!

Quinn and Kerry also had another great race at the end of a long weekend!  They finished in third place in the womens novice double!

Emily came next in the womens JV single.  After a great victory at the state championship, Emily fought hard on Sunday to earn a solid second place!

Mason and Matt raced next in the mens JV double.  They raced hard in a tough event, finishing in fourth place, just missing third place.

Anthony, Nolan, Tristan, and Jay wanted to improve on their second place finish Saturday and they did just that!  They came away with a gold medal in the mens jv quad!

The Hawks will return to the Schuylkill River on Saturday and Sunday for the Philadelphia City Championship!

HTCC had a fantastic Saturday on the Cooper River at the Garden State Scholastic Championship Regatta!  Out of the nine crews racing, seven came away with medals, and three rowed through the finish line as state champions!!

Emily Donohue was the first to race in the finals in the womens senior single event.  The single is one of the most difficult boats to race and Emily put together a great piece, finishing in second place to win a silver medal, and earned a spot at the SRAA National Championship Regatta!

Quinn Johnston and Kerry Dietrich were next up for the Hawks.  These two are both novices but they didn't let that stop them from earning a state championship medal in the womens junior double!  After a great win in the heats, the girls raced themselves to a silver medal in the finals!

Mason Weaver and Matt Weller also won their heat in the mens junior double on Saturday morning.  They looked strong coming into the finals, and had a solid fourth place finish!

Alex Tingley and Morgan Van Dexter also won their heat in the womens senior double.  They came into the final ready to race and earned themselves a silver medal as well as qualifying for the SRAA National Championship Regatta!

Dave Wakeley and Nick Perks were next up for the Hawks in the mens senior double.  They put together a solid race for themselves, finishing in fourth place overall!

Olivia Hollingsworth, Fiona Steele, Maya Jacobsen, and Sara Ladik looked to continue their dominance in the womens freshman quad, and they sure did!  They finished 22 seconds ahead of second place, continuing their undefeated streak, earning a GOLD MEDAL, the title of State Champions, and qualifying for the SRAA National Championship Regatta!

John Buan, Owen Fitzpatrick, Jake Stech, and Jon Weber followed the girls with another dominant performance!  They raced themselves to a 20 second victory in the mens novice quad event and earned themselves a GOLD MEDAL and the title of State Champions!

Anthony Johnson, Nolan McHugh, Tristan Burnham, and Jay Reinert won their heat in the mens junior quad, and setting themselves up in a solid position for the finals.  They had a great race in the finals, coming in second place and earning a silver medal!

The last race of the day for the Hawks also happened to be the biggest margin of victory!  The mens senior quad of Aidan Cronin, Vince Fitzpatrick, Jack Haigh, and Jack Savell burned down the course to a 40 second victory!  They earned themselves a GOLD MEDAL, the title of State Champions, and qualified to race at the SRAA National Championship Regatta!

Great job everyone!!!  GO HAWKS!!!!!

Today's videos are all about the front end warm up drill we do.  Notice the control the athletes have of their bodies -- the upper body stays quiet with the arms relaxed; catches drop in quickly as they approach the end of the recovery; the blades are loaded at the catch with pressure on the foot stretcher; they accelerate through the drive keeping the blades buried through the entire drive.

Front end warm-up arms only and quarter slide
Front end warm-up half slide
Front end warm-up full slide flat legs (no body swing or arm bend)
Front end warm-up full slide (body swing no arm bend)
Front end warm-up full slide (squared and feathered)

In an effort to emulate and be the best, we are going to start posting videos every so often to give you a better idea of what you should look like on the water, and different techniques to get you there.  Some videos will be coaches teaching technique, others will simply be of crews rowing well.  For the athletes, watch these videos, look for things that are different from what you are doing, and try to make those changes on the water.  For the parents, hopefully this can help you understand a little more about the anatomy of a stroke and what goes into making a boat fast.

The first post is a video of coach John Driessen (Australian National Team) teaching relaxation, balance, recovery, catch preparation, and front end load.  Click HERE to watch the video.

After the first video, take a look at some of the things he talks about in action with different examples of good blade work.  Click HERE to watch the video.

Manny Flick 4 Race Recap

4/16/2018

HTCC had a solid day of racing in the cold, rain, wind, and chop on the Schuylkill River yesterday, coming away with 4 first place finishes!

John B, Owen, Jake, and Jon W started the day for the Hawks in the novice quad.  The had a great start but an unfortunate early crab forced them to race from well behind the whole way down the course.  The boys didn't get flustered, however, and put in a strong piece!

Jack H and Jay were up next, getting an early lead in the JV double and pressing away the whole way down the course, finishing with a 12 second victory over second place!

Anthony, Davey, Tristan, and Nolan took the second victory of the day for the Hawks in the JV quad.  The boys battled with Holy Spirit the whole way down the course and were able to pull away through the island after a Holy Spirit crab and earned a 10 second victory!

Nick and Mason raced next in the varsity double.  They looked great coming down the course, fighting against tough competition.  Unfortunately a late crab left them back in the field at the finish.

Aidan, Vince, Jack H, and Jack S put together the strongest piece of the season in the varsity quad, closing the gap on the top of the field and showing that they are moving forward!

Kerry and Sara earned the third victory for the Hawks, racing to a dominating win in the novice double!  Great job girls!

Fiona, Maya, Olivia, and Quinn continued the unbeaten streak for the girls freshman quad, pulling away from a strong field and looking great as we head into championship season!

Emily raced next in the JV single, putting together a great piece and moving herself into the top position coming into the last few hundred meters.  Unfortunately her blades got caught up with the boat next to her and sent her swimming before crossing the finish line.

Morgan and Alex finished the day for the Hawks in the varsity double.  They looked solid coming down the course, finishing in third place, only 2.5 seconds off of second.  With lots of room for improvement, we are excited to see them go forward this season!

HTCC returns to the Schuylkill on Sunday for the fifth and final Flick.
