Today's videos are all about the front end warm up drill we do. Notice the control the athletes have of their bodies -- the upper body stays quiet with the arms relaxed; catches drop in quickly as they approach the end of the recovery; the blades are loaded at the catch with pressure on the foot stretcher; they accelerate through the drive keeping the blades buried through the entire drive.
Front end warm-up arms only and quarter slide Front end warm-up half slide Front end warm-up full slide flat legs (no body swing or arm bend) Front end warm-up full slide (body swing no arm bend) Front end warm-up full slide (squared and feathered) HTCC heads to the Schuylkill River on Sunday for the fifth and final Flick of the season. In an effort to emulate and be the best, we are going to start posting videos every so often to give you a better idea of what you should look like on the water, and different techniques to get you there. Some videos will be coaches teaching technique, others will simply be of crews rowing well. For the athletes, watch these videos, look for things that are different from what you are doing, and try to make those changes on the water. For the parents, hopefully this can help you understand a little more about the anatomy of a stroke and what goes into making a boat fast.
The first post is a video of coach John Driessen (Australian National Team) teaching relaxation, balance, recovery, catch preparation, and front end load. Click HERE to watch the video. After the first video, take a look at some of the things he talks about in action with different examples of good blade work. Click HERE to watch the video. GO HAWKS!!! HTCC had a solid day of racing in the cold, rain, wind, and chop on the Schuylkill River yesterday, coming away with 4 first place finishes!
John B, Owen, Jake, and Jon W started the day for the Hawks in the novice quad. The had a great start but an unfortunate early crab forced them to race from well behind the whole way down the course. The boys didn't get flustered, however, and put in a strong piece! Jack H and Jay were up next, getting an early lead in the JV double and pressing away the whole way down the course, finishing with a 12 second victory over second place! Anthony, Davey, Tristan, and Nolan took the second victory of the day for the Hawks in the JV quad. The boys battled with Holy Spirit the whole way down the course and were able to pull away through the island after a Holy Spirit crab and earned a 10 second victory! Nick and Mason raced next in the varsity double. They looked great coming down the course, fighting against tough competition. Unfortunately a late crab left them back in the field at the finish. Aidan, Vince, Jack H, and Jack S put together the strongest piece of the season in the varsity quad, closing the gap on the top of the field and showing that they are moving forward! Kerry and Sara earned the third victory for the Hawks, racing to a dominating win in the novice double! Great job girls! Fiona, Maya, Olivia, and Quinn continued the unbeaten streak for the girls freshman quad, pulling away from a strong field and looking great as we head into championship season! Emily raced next in the JV single, putting together a great piece and moving herself into the top position coming into the last few hundred meters. Unfortunately her blades got caught up with the boat next to her and sent her swimming before crossing the finish line. Morgan and Alex finished the day for the Hawks in the varsity double. They looked solid coming down the course, finishing in third place, only 2.5 seconds off of second. With lots of room for improvement, we are excited to see them go forward this season! HTCC returns to the Schuylkill on Sunday for the fifth and final Flick. GO HAWKS!!!!!! HTCC will return to the Schuylkill River on Sunday for the fourth Manny Flick Regatta. The forecast looks like rain so be sure to dress appropriately and bring extra clothes. All athletes are required to arrive at the boat trailer two hours prior to race time.
