This is a reminder that novices are OFF TODAY. Varsity will practice this afternoon and will be OFF TOMORROW.
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: Varsity: 5 am to 7 am Novice: 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm The team enjoyed another sunny day by the river yesterday at the Cooper Cup. Sunday saw four races for the Hawks beginning with the men’s varsity double. The pair finished 3rd in their heat with a time of 7:24.83; we are excited to get to work preparing for this year’s SRAA’s with these two.
Next race up was the men’s varsity quad where Joel, Noah, Ryan, and Dan W raced against Conestoga, Navasink, and St. Joe’s HS. Amazingly, the foursome was able to finish the race amidst breaking an oar at the thousand meter mark. The remaining 3 rowers pushed through to the finish line and grabbed 4th place. Angela and Noa then raced in the women’s lightweight varsity double. They lined up beside Conestoga, River Rowing A & B, Holy Spirit, and Upper Merion. The girls rowed an aggressive race, pushing their rate and concentrating on quick catches. They came in at a close 3rd place, just seconds after 1st. The women’s novice quad raced next with Olivia H, Kayla, Kara, and Olivia H pushing hard every stroke. The crew had a rough start but quickly got back into the race and amazingly caught up to steal the 3rd place title. In heat 1 of the men’s novice quads, Paul, Dan M, Luke, and Erik won gold and finished an impressive 11.77 seconds before the 2nd place boat. The crew looked great coming down the river with strong catches and big leg-drive. In heat 2, Mike, Liam, Parker, and Nick got silver! They matched up against Conestoga, St Joe’s HS, Norwalk, and SJRC. They entered this race in an unfamiliar lineup yet took advantage of the challenge. The crew came down the river looking strong and together; and they were able to see their hard work pay off at the finish line. Colin and Matteo also took advantage of a new lineup and new boat. They lined up for their first race in the men’s novice double alongside Shipley, St. Joe’s HS, and Germantown Academy. The pair looked controlled coming down the race course and finished in 3rd place. Joey rowed next in the men’s JV single where he got the silver place metal! He raced against Norwalk River, Baltimore, River Rowing, Whitemarsh, and Haddonfield. Joey looked calm and strong throughout the 2k and held off 3rd place by a close second. The last race of the day was the women’s JV quad. Brie, Rachel, Becca, and Sophia faced their 3rd race of the weekend against River Rowing, Friends Select, Holy Spirit, Springside Chestnut Hill, Navesink, and Whitemarsh. The winds had just died down before the girl’s took their place in the stake boat. They came down the river backing in their blades and sending the boat with each stroke which took them to finish in 5th place out of 7. We’d like to thank the family and friends who spent their weekend cheering on the Hawks from the shoreline. We appreciate your support and commitment to the team. Thank you for yet another great food tent that was filled with healthy fuel for our athletes! We will see everyone next week in Philadelphia for the PSRA City Champs. The Hawks had a very successful day on the Cooper River yesterday at the Garden State Championship. The team earned medals in 9 out of the team's 11 events.
First up, Joey stole bronze in the men's jv single. The conditions yesterday we're not ideal for a single, but that didn't stop Joey from cutting through the waves and finishing ahead of Haddonfield. Next up, Angela and Noa raced hard and earned a silver medal finish in the lightweight double, beating out Montclair, Holy Spirit, and Westfield. Mike and Nick fought the wind to reach 4th place in the men's lightweight double. The pair rose to the occasion while racing against a few more experienced crews in a new category. They finished with a time of 6:46.63. Maddie and Mariana raced in the varsity double and finished in 3rd. This was the first race of the season for senior Maddie who's been working hard to overcome an injury. The pair challenged themselves to complete a controlled 1500 meters. The first set of gold medals went to Tyler and Keaton who raced in the men's varsity double. The pair finished ahead of Don Bosco, Montclair, St. Joe's HS, Christian Brothers, and Bergen Catholic. Tyler and Keaton won a bid to SRAA's. The Hawks saw gold again in the men's freshman quad. Erik, Luke, Paul, and Dan M flew past their competition and rightfully earned first place, securing their bid to the SRAA's. Gold again for the women's novice quad! Olivia E, Kara, Kayla, and Olivia H won their first gold of her season yesterday, pushing past Ridgewood and Westfield. These girls have been hitting the water hard, and their dedication was proven on race day. More medals for the Hawks! The men's novice quad got silver in their race. Parker, Matteo, Colin, and Liam finished with a time of 5:53.18 ahead of St. Joe's HS, Bergen Catholic, and Westfield. Bronze medals were awarded to the women's JV quad yesterday afternoon. Brie, Becca, Sophia, and Rachel arrived early to race in heat 1, and pushed past Westfield to secure their spot in the final. In the afternoon, the girls left all their energy on the water and finished in 3rd place against some tough competition. Gold medals went to the men's varsity quad! Joel, Noah, Dan W, and Ryan pushed through each stroke and finished 6.86 seconds before the 2nd place boat. The finished ahead of Teaneck, Bergen Catholic, Westfield, St. Joe's HS, and Ridgewood. The boy's rowed a powerful 1500, and their gold medals are well deserved. They also qualified for SRAA's What an amazing day for the Haddon Twp Hawks! The coaches are impressed with the perseverance the team showed yesterday. We look forward to the team's continuing growth, and are excited to see more medals in the upcoming regattas. We are back here in the action competing at the Cooper Cup today. We can't wait to watch some great races and enjoy our Sunday on the Cooper. Varsity: 5 am to 7 am on water Varsity and Novices: 11 am to 1 pm in erg room Novices: 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm on water The Hawks competed in Flick #5 yesterday while enjoying some beautiful weather and facing some unexpected water conditions.
On the girl's side: Novice Gig: Amanda kicked off the day racing in the novice gig. This was her first time racing in the category, and second time rowing in her racing shell. She was able to place 2nd overall which was an awesome feat. JV Single: Rachel arrived early for her race and was able to enjoy the calm, flat water of the morning. She rowed a controlled race and finished with a time of 8:12:18. LWT Double: 1st place for the Hawks! Angela and Noa put up a fight in a close race and clinched the first place title in their heat. Varsity Single: Mariana rowed a steady race, concentrating on balance and technique, and finished fourth in her heat. Novice Double: Kayla and Rebecca competed in their first head race of the spring in the novice double. Kayla faced her fears of sitting bow seat and Rebecca kept calm in the waves. Although the pair was thrown some challenges in the middle of racing, they impressively kept focus and finished a tough race. Novice Quad: Olivia E, Kara, Sophia, and Olivia H rowed an awesome head race and finished 3rd overall. They rowed a very controlled 1500 meters, focusing on ratio and power. JV Double: Brie and Lauren raced down the course finishing their race in 6:52.24. They beat out tough competitors like Holy Spirit and Episcopal to finish 4th overall in the head race. On the boy's side: Novice Double: Mike and Nick rowed a controlled, steady race finishing with a time of 7:24.11. The coaches are excited about the continual growth these brothers show every week; big things are to come from this pair. Novice Quad A: Another 1st for the Hawks! Erik, Dan M, Luke, and Paul finished 1st overall out of 10 boats. Their raced proved to be exciting to watch as they moved past a Malvern quad under the wires. These boys didn't give up one stroke on race day, and their hard work paid off. Novice Quad B: Parker, Colin, Matteo, and Liam finished their 1500 meter race in 7:05.97. Their quad has been getting better and better each week and are expected to continue their growth. JV Single: Dan braved the waves in a single and impressively finished his race without capsizing. He rowed a difficult 1500 finishing with a time of 7:44.17. Varsity Double: Joey and Tyler fought hard for their 2nd place achievement. They beat out the third place competitor by 1:35:0 seconds while also braving increasing chop. Varisty Quad: Joel, Ryan S, Noah, and Keaton faced the worst conditions of the day, as a four in the following race capsized. They fought against the whitecaps and finished their race in 5:57.56. The team will gear up now for a week of two-a-days. Our hopes with this week are for the team to get stronger, faster, and more technical with their rowing. It will be a challenging week but will be instrumental in the continual growth and success of the team. Thank you, friends and family, for supporting the team and for organizing a wonderful food tent. Thank you to the Remutz’ for arriving early to set up the tent, and to the Fannelli’s for coming before sunrise to drop off the trailer and waiting until sunset to pick it up again. Welcome to 5th and final Flick of 2014... We have a VERY busy Sunday this week so you must make sure you are where you need to be, when you need to be! The "arrive by" time is when you need to arrive AT THE TRAILER, not the food tent.
