Garden States and Cooper Cup Recap

4/27/2015

The club is enjoying a day off today after a fantastic weekend of racing that started on Saturday at the Garden State Scholastic Championship and ended yesterday with the Cooper Cup.

Garden States:

HTCC had all nine crews in the finals for Garden States on Saturday, with seven crews taking home medals!

Matteo started finals racing with his best race of the year and an impressive silver medal in the boys junior single.

Sophia and Christine followed Matteo with another great race in the girls junior double.  Although they were only in the lineup for two days prior to the race, they raced hard and brought home a silver medal.

In one of the closest and most exciting races of the day, Kara, Olivia E, Rebecca, and Rachel, missed out on gold by 1 second to a very fast Ridgewood crew in the girls junior quad.

Parker, Dan, Walter, and Duff won the first gold medal of the day for the Hawks in the boys junior quad.  The boys were even with Ridgewood for most of the race but were able to open a four second gap in the last 500 meters.

Joey followed the girls by taking home a silver medal in the boys senior single and qualifying himself for the Scholastic National Championship!

Although both girls are novices, Ella and Julie put together an amazing race against tough competition and finished fifth in the girls senior double.  After advancing out of heats, Joel and Noah followed the girls with another fifth place finish in the boys senior double.

The last two races of the day showed some of the most dominating performances of the season by the Hawks.  Angela, Lauren, Olivia H, and Noa brought home gold medals in the girls senior quad, beating the second place finisher by 20 seconds!  In the very next race, Erik, Springer, Luke, and Keaton grabbed their own gold medals, beating the second place finisher by 18 seconds!

Automatically Qualified for SRAA National Championship:
MV4x: Erik/Springer/Luke/Keaton
WV4x: Angela/Lauren/Olivia H/Noa
MV1x: Joey
MJV4x: Parker/Dan/Walter/Duff

Cooper Cup:
The club returned to the Cooper yesterday to compete in the Cooper Cup.  This race is open to clubs and is 2000 meters (500m longer than the standard scholastic distance of 1500m).  Although tired, every crew stepped up and put forward strong performances.

HTCC had two mens varsity doubles racing on Sunday (Joel/Noah and Joey/Tyler).  Both crews advanced from heats to semis, and Joel and Noah continued on to the finals, where they finished in fifth place, despite it being their fifth race of the weekend!

Ella and Julie had a great race in the girls novice double, finishing in second place in their flight despite being run into by another crew.  Ella showed great determination by finishing the race after being hit in the face by the other crew's oars!

Matteo followed the girls with another strong race, holding tight with the field for the first thousand meters.

Christine and Sophia finished in second for the second day in a row in the girls JV double, again putting together their finest performance of the year.

Angela, Lauren, Olivia H, and Noa won their heat in the girls varsity quad and advanced to the final where they finished in third place behind a very fast River Rowing crew and Conestoga.

Erik, Springer, Luke, and Keaton finished in second place in their heat in the boys varsity quad and went on to the finals where they mounted a tremendous comeback in the sprint, returning from over o boatlength down to just missing gold by a bow deck.

Kara, Olivia E, Rebecca, and Rachel dominated the field in the girls jv quad, finishing in first place overall and taking home the only gold medals of the day for the club!

In the final race of the day, Parker, Dan, Walter, and Duff fought hard in the boys jv quad, racing neck and neck with River Rowing all the way down the course, but in the end were unable to pass them and took home a solid second place overall.

The Hawks will return to the Schuylkill next weekend for the Philadelphia City Championships.

Manny Flick #5 Race Report

4/20/2015

The 5th and final Flick was held Sunday on the beautiful Schuylkill River. The races were organized with the boy’s racing all morning and the girls taking over the afternoon.

·         The morning started out with Matteo stepping out to race in the single for the first time. He finished his 15k race in 7:08.12. With each week Matteo is improving; and we look forward to watching his continual growth.

·         Parker, Paul, Walter, and Dan then took on the other JV quads a pulled out a 2nd place title! The finished their race in 5:07.85 with open water between them and the next finisher.

·         Noah and Joel raced next in the varsity double and finished with a time of 5:34.86 in their heat. Tyler and Joey also raced among the varsity doubles and finished first in their heat! The boys flew down the course in 5:27.78, an amazing 10.72 seconds before the 2nd place finisher. The boys proved their versatility again this week by jumping into a new lineup on race day and not letting the change effect their determination.

·         The boys’ varsity quad finished up the last of the morning races and lined up beside some fast crews. Ryan, Luke, Erik, and Keaton fought with each stroke in a very close, exciting race and completed the 15000 meters in 4:48.04, just 0.39 seconds behind 2nd place.

In the afternoon, it was the girl’s turn to bring the heat.

·         The JV quad raced down the river exemplifying grand improvement from last week. The completed their race in 6:37.67.

·         Kara and Rachel then geared up to race amongst the varsity doubles. All spectators watching from the shoreline could see the effort these girls gave to their race. It was clear to see bend in their oars and determination in their eyes. The finished in close 4th place with a time of 6:08.87.

·         The last race of the day proved to be one worth waiting for. Angela, Olivia E, Lauren, and Noa got the W racing beside the varsity quads! They finished 2 seconds before their 2nd place competitor and clocked a time of 5:35.40.

We’re excited to have completed the Manny Flick Series and move on to compete in Garden States next weekend!  Thank you to the family and friends who came out to support this weekend and provide a wonderful food tent.

Thank you to the Fanelle’s for safety driving the trailer to and from the race course. You'll be enjoying a well-deserved break from duty as we race on our own turf for the next 2 weeks.

Manny Flick #4 Race Report

4/13/2015

The HT Hawks were welcomed to the Schuylkill on Sunday with warm weather and calm conditions. The morning started off with Sophia, Christine, Julie, and Ella racing in the JV Quad. They held their own in an experienced category and finished their race in 7:13:14. The girls are excited to work hard this week perfecting a sprint strategy for next week’s race. Stepping out in a new lineup, Kara and Rachel raced in the Varsity Double yesterday. Their focus and determination led them down the race course in 6:02.6. Next up, Angela, Lauren, Olivia H, and Noa took on the other Varsity Quads. The girls pulled ahead of their local competition and finished in 2nd place with a time of 5:20.43.

The boys took on the afternoon races. Matteo raced in the gig among other JV Singles and finished his 2K in 7:51.45. Matteo has been working hard and improving each day in the gig, and he is up for the challenging of racing in the single next week! In the boy’s JV Quad, Paul, Parker, Walter, and Dan raced down the Schuylkill in 5:35.55. These guys have some serious power; they looked strong and aggressive as they charged down the river. Next up in the Varsity doubles, Joey and Noah finished their race in 5:45.66 while Noah and Joey finished in the next heat in 6:07.91. These guys have embraced their new lineups and proved to be valuably versatile on race day. The last race for the hawks took place in the evening with Erik, Ryan, Luke, and Keaton competing among the top Varsity Quads. They raced down the course in 5:07.08, not far behind first and second place.

Thank you to the Fanelle’s , John & Krista, for safely driving the trailer to and from the river. Thank you, family and friends, for providing a wonderful food tent.

We will continue to improve our capabilities and build our strength this week in practice. Enjoy your day off tomorrow, and be ready to row Wednesday at 5am.
