The Haddon Township Crew Club braved cold temperatures, high winds, and heavy rain this weekend at the USRowing Mid-Atlantic Youth Championships. Despite the weather ending the weekend early, the club came away with a big win in the varsity quad and solid finishes from the other crews who had the chance to race. By winning their event, Luke Brown, Erik Tingley, Dan McGarry, and Paul Duffy qualified to race in the USRowing Youth National Championship in Sarasota, Florida on June 9th-11th. This event is open to all junior crews, not just scholastic teams. The boys finished 3 seconds ahead of second place Malvern Prep, and 5 seconds ahead of third place Conestoga.
In other races, Ella Clemens put together a solid performance finishing 8th in the womens youth single. Parker Revier and Vince Fitzpatrick also finished 8th overall in the mens youth double event. In the under 17 womens double, Portia Castillo and Erica Peterson finished 10th overall. The Hawks had two crews racing in the mens under 17 double. Jack Mallgrave and Jay Reinert finished 5th and only 5 seconds out of the medals, and Will Neunson and Mike Martino finished 10th. Unfortunately the race was cut short due to weather before the last three crews could race.
The Hawks will head to the Schuylkill River this weekend to face off against 979 entries from 133 high schools from across North America in the Stotesbury Cup Regatta.
Apologies for the delay in getting the schedule out. With the weather forecast being what it is, race organizers were forced to change the original schedule and move to an inclement weather plan. This means that all racing will be held on Saturday -- there will be NO RACING ON SUNDAY. Time trials will be held in the morning with the top six crews in each event moving to finals in the afternoon. All athletes must arrive 2 hours prior to race time. Be sure to dress for the weather, it is going to pour all day. BRING EXTRA CLOTHES (a towel would probably be a good idea as well).

The Crew Club had a fantastic weekend at the Philadelphia City Championships on the Schuylkill River. The club had 10 crews advance to the finals, and came away with 5 medals, including 4 golds and a 7th place overall finish (scull/sweep) in the points contest, in what proved to be the team's most successful city championship ever!
Jack M. started the day off for the Hawks with what could be called the race of the day in the boys novice single. He battled with Bonner throughout the piece trading first place position and finally pulled it out in the last few strokes to win gold!
Mackenzie, Gillian, Alex, and Brooke started a string of three races with the Hawks in top position. The girls dominated the novice quad event, winning gold by almost 13 seconds! In the next race down the course, Nolan, Tristan, Anthony, and Jay won gold in the boys novice quad by almost 5 seconds! In what the coaches are calling the heart attack race, Matt, Nick, Jack H, and Jack S caught a crab in the first three strokes dropping to two boat lengths down on the entire boys freshman quad field. They kept their cool, however, and fought back, walking through every other crew to earn gold by over 3 seconds!
The boys varsity quad of Luke, Erik, Dan and Duff came down the course with a fantastic piece finishing with a bronze medal in a race where the top three times were within 3 seconds and second and third place were decided by 0.25 seconds.
Congrats to all crews! Full results are listed below.

HTCC returned to the Schuylkill today for the 5th and final regatta in the Manny Flick Series. Despite early calls for lousy weather, today saw some of the best racing conditions of the season and a very good day for the Hawks!
Mike and Will started the day for the Hawks with a great race and a solid fourth place finish in the novice double.
Jack S, Jack M, Anthony, and Jay followed with a dominating performance in the novice quad, finishing first in their flight and first overall by 15 seconds! Way to go boys!
In what may have been the best finish of the day, Parker and Vince put together an amazing sprint, walking through Christian Brothers in the last few strokes of the race, winning by 0.34 seconds!
Luke, Erik, Dan, and Duff followed next with a tough race in the varsity quad, finishing in third place. The boys were in fourth coming into the last 100 meters but managed to find a way to pick the boat up and pull back into the top three.
In the first time trial of the day for the Hawks, Matt, Nolan, Nick, and Jack H had a difficult race but still finished in second place overall!
Aidan went next in time trials in a stacked JV single field, finishing in seventh place overall with a solid time.
Ella, Emily, Portia, and Erica had one of their best pieces during the time trial in the JV quad! Despite racing in a JV event with three novices in the boat they were able to pass another crew and finished with a great time overall!
In the last race of the day for the Hawks, Mackenzie, Brooke, Alex, and Gillian flew ahead early and took a commanding lead in the novice quad. They were able to open up their lead even further through the race and finished in first place by 6 seconds! Great job girls!!
The Hawks will be coming home this weekend to race in the Garden State Scholastic Championship Regatta on Saturday and the Cooper Cup on Sunday.
The practice schedule this week is as follows:
Monday: Unload and rig after school and then water practice
Wednesday-Friday: 5 am to 7 am water practice
It's hard to believe but we have reached the fifth and final race in the Flick series! HTCC will head back to the Schuylkill on Sunday to face off against tough competition in the largest race of the series. The fifth Flick also serves to seed entries for the Philadelphia City Championship and the Garden State Scholastic Championship. Everyone be sure to rest up before your race, eat healthy and drink lots of water! The weather for Sunday looks wet so bring your rain gear and extra clothes for after racing. All athletes must arrive at the trailer 2 hours prior to race time. We will have three crews racing in Time Trials instead of in side by side races due to the number of entries in the regatta.
