The Hawks competed in Flick #5 yesterday while enjoying some beautiful weather and facing some unexpected water conditions.
On the girl's side: Novice Gig: Amanda kicked off the day racing in the novice gig. This was her first time racing in the category, and second time rowing in her racing shell. She was able to place 2nd overall which was an awesome feat. JV Single: Rachel arrived early for her race and was able to enjoy the calm, flat water of the morning. She rowed a controlled race and finished with a time of 8:12:18. LWT Double: 1st place for the Hawks! Angela and Noa put up a fight in a close race and clinched the first place title in their heat. Varsity Single: Mariana rowed a steady race, concentrating on balance and technique, and finished fourth in her heat. Novice Double: Kayla and Rebecca competed in their first head race of the spring in the novice double. Kayla faced her fears of sitting bow seat and Rebecca kept calm in the waves. Although the pair was thrown some challenges in the middle of racing, they impressively kept focus and finished a tough race. Novice Quad: Olivia E, Kara, Sophia, and Olivia H rowed an awesome head race and finished 3rd overall. They rowed a very controlled 1500 meters, focusing on ratio and power. JV Double: Brie and Lauren raced down the course finishing their race in 6:52.24. They beat out tough competitors like Holy Spirit and Episcopal to finish 4th overall in the head race. On the boy's side: Novice Double: Mike and Nick rowed a controlled, steady race finishing with a time of 7:24.11. The coaches are excited about the continual growth these brothers show every week; big things are to come from this pair. Novice Quad A: Another 1st for the Hawks! Erik, Dan M, Luke, and Paul finished 1st overall out of 10 boats. Their raced proved to be exciting to watch as they moved past a Malvern quad under the wires. These boys didn't give up one stroke on race day, and their hard work paid off. Novice Quad B: Parker, Colin, Matteo, and Liam finished their 1500 meter race in 7:05.97. Their quad has been getting better and better each week and are expected to continue their growth. JV Single: Dan braved the waves in a single and impressively finished his race without capsizing. He rowed a difficult 1500 finishing with a time of 7:44.17. Varsity Double: Joey and Tyler fought hard for their 2nd place achievement. They beat out the third place competitor by 1:35:0 seconds while also braving increasing chop. Varisty Quad: Joel, Ryan S, Noah, and Keaton faced the worst conditions of the day, as a four in the following race capsized. They fought against the whitecaps and finished their race in 5:57.56. The team will gear up now for a week of two-a-days. Our hopes with this week are for the team to get stronger, faster, and more technical with their rowing. It will be a challenging week but will be instrumental in the continual growth and success of the team. Thank you, friends and family, for supporting the team and for organizing a wonderful food tent. Thank you to the Remutz’ for arriving early to set up the tent, and to the Fannelli’s for coming before sunrise to drop off the trailer and waiting until sunset to pick it up again.
